Regarding Formation of a Special Department Within the Belgrade District
Court
Organization Transparency Serbia, a branch of Transparency
International, the only international organization specialized in
fighting the corruption, welcomes the announcement of a special department
formation within the Belgrade District Court. This department will be
authorized for putting the organized crime suspects on trial.
Transparency Serbia believes that during the investigation
and the trials intendedfor theorganized crime group members,
all the cases when these persons have bribed those employed in the administration
of justice, police and other state institutions, should be fully revealed.
Organized crime uses corruption as a means of achieving its goals, but
at the same time, it also undermines the citizens' trust in the institutions.
Therefore, the harmful consequences for the society arising from such
ACTIVITIES, are much greater than the damage done by corrupt individuals
in specific cases.
Transparency Serbia expects that the special prosecutor and
future judges of particular departments, shall perform this job successfully,
and that they shall look on the corruption as none the less important
sphere of their activity, as specified in the provisions of the Law on
the organization and competence of state organs in stamping out the organized
crime.
Furthermore, such an activity would be in accordance with the provisions
of Articles 20 and 23 of Criminal Law Convention on corruption, ratified
by our country more than a year ago, as well as with the provisions of
Article 9 of the UN Convention against transnational organized crime.
